Lifelong Marfa resident Eva Peña Cortez, 89, left this earth and family to be with the Lord on August 14, 2014 after a long illness.
She was born December 9, 1924 in Marfa to Marcos Peña Sr. and Paulita Salinas Peña.
Eva lived all her life in Marfa and was always in service to her community. She served cakes and made cookies for weddings, wedding shower parties, baby showers and graduation parties to any and all who asked for her help.
She had a wonderful sense of humor, was witty and gracious and always giving. She served the Marfa community from her heart, was always happy, loved to dance, and was always laughing.
She is survived by her husband, Pedro Cortez Sr. of Marfa; her sons, Billy Cortez of Marfa, Pete Cortez Jr. of Odessa, and Willie Cortez, also of Odessa; her daughters, Olga Martinez of Garland, Texas, and Frances Escarsega of Odessa; her brothers, Marcos Peña Jr. of Marfa, and Adan Peña of San Antonio; her sister, Maria Alicia Peña of Odessa; also 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grand children, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
The Rosary and funeral Mass begin at 9am Friday, September 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa with burial in Merced Cemetery.
The funeral date is to accommodate a grandson who is in the U.S. Navy.
