Jovita Pando, 72, of Lubbock and formerly of Presidio passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015.
She was born March 10, 1943 to Eutimio and María Tarango Gonzales in Los Fresnos, Chihuahua, México.
Jovita married Luciano Gonzales in 1962, and had two daughters of that marriage, Velma and Lucía. After the loss of her first husband, Jovita married Moisés Pando in Greeley, Colorado, on October 28, 1967, and had her remaining four children.
Among a long list of achievements, Jovita is recognized as having served as city councilwoman for, and being a highly respected and active person of the city of Presidio.
She was a member of the Santa Teresa de Jesus Catholic Church choir in Presidio.
Jovita was a sales director for Mary Kay cosmetics and was awarded two vehicles for her leadership skills.
She assisted in constructing a church where she was born in Mexico. She also assisted more than 800 individuals in obtaining their legal residency under the amnesty program during the 1980s. She transported the elderly to and from their doctor appointments in El Paso and Alpine when she worked for the Big Bend Community Action Agency.
She is survived by her mother, Maria T. Gonzales; her husband, Moises Pando Sr.; six children, Velma G. Solórzano, Lucía Gonzales, Patricia Pando, Beatriz Vilchis, Magdalena Pando and Moises Pando Jr.; nine grandchildren, Isaías Joel Solórzano, Ezekiel Dominic Solórzano, Jacob Cuong Gonzales Le, Karina Jovi Isabel Barraza, Esteban Pando, Josue David Pando, Victor Alfonso Lopez, Esteban Lopez, Viviana Melendez; six great-grandchildren, Adalynn Grace Solórzano, Isaías Joaquín Solórzano, Alijah Viviana Pando, Josué Alejandro Pando, Julián Andrés Pando and Julián Hector Lopez; and 12 siblings, Maria Nieves Sanchez, Juana Rangel, José Luís Gonzales, Hector Gonzales, Martín Gonzales, Maria Elena Carrasco, Damacio Gonzales, Rosa Gonzales, Ismael Gonzales, Yolanda Martinez, Alfredo Gonzales and Teresa Gonzales.
She was preceded in death by her father, Eutimio Gonzales, and a grandchild, José Alejandro Cedillo.
The family recited the Rosary the evening of Sunday, April 5 at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers in Lubbock, followed by a reception thereafter.
Family and friends celebrated Jovita’s life of 72 years the morning of Monday, April 6 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Lubbock, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.
