American sculptor Tony Feher, 60, died Friday, June 24, 2016 of liver cancer, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Feher was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and spent most of his young life in Corpus Christi.

As an artist, Feher was represented by Houston-based Hiram Butler Gallery and was honored with a 20-year retrospective of his work at the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston in late 2012. The companion show at DiverseWorks was also exhibited during this time. The retrospective travelled through Iowa, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio.

Feher also held an exhibition in Marfa during the 2006 Chinati Foundation Open House weekend at the Arena, utilizing his trademark use of plastic water bottles and twine.

The late artist was one of the first major artists to be diagnosed with AIDs, which fueled many of his works through artistic metaphor, such as one work, “The Penny Piece,” in which a line of pennies led up to a jar, with the artist adding one more for each birthday he had.

Feher spent the final few years of his life working and living in New York City.

Memorial services for the artist are pending.
