Julia Monclova

Julia “Jules” Monclova, 79, of Alpine entered eternal life on Sunday, January 1, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Monday, August 30, 1937 to Jesus Portillo and Theresa Cobos Portillo in Alpine.

Jules worked in the Sul Ross State University physical plant department and retired with 20 years of service to the university.

She was known for her love of family, her trips to Las Vegas to play the slot machines at the casinos, her love of baseball, and her favorite player, Lance Berkman.

She was known to ride around Alpine in her Ford F-150 while drinking her Coke and smoking her Marlboro Lights cigarettes. She also enjoyed playing bingo when games were being held in Alpine.

Jules enjoyed cooking meals for her family as well as playing the Texas Lottery.

She will be missed by all who knew her and remembered as a strong person who loved life.

Those left to cherish the memory of Jules are her two sons, Jose Luis “Guy” Monclova of Alpine and Randy Monclova of Alamogordo, New Mexico; her two daughters, Belinda Abbate of Houston and Corina Marquez of Sanderson; her four sisters, Gloria Gallego of Alpine, Berta Garcia of Monahans, Elma Schodts of Grand Prairie, and Chavela Portillo of El Paso; her three brothers, Jose Portillo of Monahans, Jesus “Chuy” Portillo of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Armando Portillo of Monahans; also 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews as well as her many beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years, Pablo “Papi” Rodriguez Monclova; her son, Rodolfo Portillo Monclova; and two brothers, David Portillo and Luis Portillo.

Rosary was the evening of Friday, January 6 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and was recited by Rosella Salmon. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated the morning of Saturday, January 7 at the church. Burial was in Holy Angels Cemetery. Fr. Robert S. Kobe officiated.

Those paying tribute and honoring Jules by serving as pallbearers were Rodolfo Monclova, Reymundo Monclova Jr., Paul Rodgers, Jimmy Morris, Sam Dutchover, and Fernando Sanchez. Serving as honorary pallbearer was Andrew Rivera.

Those honored with offering the readings during Mass were Amanda Rodriquez, Elizabeth Monclova, Selena Monclova and Andrea Sanchez.
