Mary Belle Mitchell

Mary Belle Mitchell, 75, of Marfa passed away November 10, 2013 in Midland after an illness.

She was born June 18, 1938 to Thelma and Charles Ten Eyck in Longview, Texas. Mary Belle grew up in Midland, graduating from Midland High School in 1956. She attended Texas Tech University, where she met her husband.

After living in Midland, Odessa and Bountiful, Utah, she moved to Tucson, Arizona, attended the University of Arizona, and received a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and two Master’s degrees. She was a long-time employee of the Tucson Unified School District as a teacher and administrator.

She was active in the hiking and bridge clubs in Marfa, served on the Marfa Public Library board, and helped establish Centennial Park in the shadow of the Presidio County Courthouse in Marfa.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William Kerr Mitchell of Marfa; her daughter, Kerrlita and husband Joe Westrick of Goodyear, Arizona; her sons, Thomas and wife Carol, of Cedar Park, Texas and William and wife Teresa, of Lynden, Washington; a brother, James and his wife Louanne Ten Eyck of Dallas; and her grandchildren, William Westrick of Palo Alto, California, Sarah Westrick of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Marcy Mitchell of Marfa, Adriana Mitchell and Mariana Mitchell of Lynden, and Andrew, Abigail and Jessie Mitchell of Cedar Park.

She had numerous life-long friends who will all miss her very much.

Services have been held.
