Presidio native and longtime Marfa resident Jose E. “Lalo” Jimenez, 81, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Reeves County Hospital in Pecos.

Rosary will be recited at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa at 11am Saturday, August 2, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at noon, officiated by Fr. Esteban Sescon. Burial will be in Merced Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Lonnie Hillin, Billy Hernandez, Oscar Rey Jimenez, Marco A. Jimenez, Javier A. Moguel, and Robert Silva.  Honorary pallbearers are Ismael Vasquez, Rito Rivera, Mario Rivera, Felipe Cordero, Salvador Hernandez, Jose “Pepe” Portillo, Juan Dominguez, and Ramon Nuñez.

Mr. Jimenez was born in Presidio on April 21, 1933 to the late Florencio and Eleuteria (Aguilar) Jimenez.  He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He and his wife, Frances, owned and operated Jimenez Chevron station and bus stop in Marfa. He had served as a Presidio County commissioner and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife of over 55 years, Frances (Prieto) Jimenez of Marfa; four sons:  Jose A. Jimenez and wife Teresa of Midland, Oscar P. Jimenez and wife Edna of Alpine, Frank P. Jimenez and wife Abigail of Midland, and Florencio A. “Tony” Jimenez and wife Ruby of San Antonio; three sisters, Alicia Jimenez, Juanita Hillin, and Ernestina “Nina” Hernandez, all of Presidio; and eight grandchildren, Marco A. Jimenez of Lago Vista, Briana Jimenez of Lubbock, Elisha Jimenez and Oscar Rey Jimenez, both of Alpine, Rebecca Jimenez and Frances McKayla Jimenez, both of Midland, and Gia N. Jimenez and Michael X. Jimenez, both of San Antonio.

A sister, Elidia “Lela” Molinar, preceded him in death.

Michael Sanchez Ohl, 26, of Andrews and formerly of Marfa, passed away July 25, 2014.

Michael was born January 10, 1988 to Richard Scott Ohl and Carmelina Sanchez.

Michael attended school in Marfa and later Terlingua.

He loved to fish, garden and barbeque with his girlfriend Betsy Sifuentes of Ralls, Texas, his sister Bianca and her husband, and his mother, Carmelina.

He worked for Mid West Trucking Co. of Andrews. He was working on getting his commercial drivers license.

Michael is survived by his daughter, Brianna Sanchez Ohl; his girlfriend of two years, Betsy Sifuentes; his sister, Bianca Ohl Sanchez; his mother, Carmelina Sanchez; his father, Richard Scott Ohl; maternal grandparents, Elias and Berta Sanchez; his paternal grandfather, George Bryan; his stepmother, Belda Ohl; step-siblings Tanya and Taylor Ohl; and uncles; cousins; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Shirley Bryan.

Services were held on Tuesday, August 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in Merced Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were made by Alpine Memorial Funeral.

Former longtime Alpine resident Maudie Marie Hillger-Cantwell, 101, passed away July 1, 2014 in Port Townsend’s Seaport Landing, Washington.

She was born July 21, 1912 to Harry and Eula Hill.

She was known as “Marie,” and affectionately referred to as “Sis” by 10 siblings and a host of nieces and nephews; and lovingly called “Mema” by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. This remarkable lady enjoyed nearly 102 years of life filled with memories of family, church, and community events.

Most of those years were spent in her home state of Texas, where she grew up and later shared life in Alpine with her husband, Elmer Eugene Hillger and their two sons, Tye and Rob.

Widowed in 1975, she married Hoy Cantwell a few years later, traveling with her husband to and from their second home in Chula Vista, California. Widowed a second time, Marie returned to Alpine, remaining there until 2005, when she moved to Washington to reside in Longview, then Port Townsend’s Seaport Landing.

Whether serving as homemaker, office manager for her husband’s Texaco wholesale business, museum docent for Sul Ross State University, or travel companion with her six lively sisters, Marie led a life rich with experiences.

Marie will be fondly remembered by her friends and family for her stories of growing up as one of 11 children, her faith in Christ and subsequent witness to friends and colleagues, her endearing Texan accent, her engaging laughter, and of course, her penchant for a frequent Starbucks latte.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, six sisters, and by her son, Robert. Her surviving son, Tye, lives in Port Townsend.

A Port Townsend celebration of Marie’s life was held at Seaport Landing on Wednesday, July 16.

A Texas memorial will be held at a later date.

Baudilio “Lilo” J. Hernandez, 78, of Miami, Arizona, passed away Friday, July 25, 2014, in Mesa, Arizona.

He was born in Presidio on August 10, 1935, the son of Maria Jesusita (Morales) and Baudilio A Hernandez. He was the youngest of six children.

Lilo was well known in the community and helped out family and friends when needed. He loved fishing, playing sports with his children, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lilo leaves behind in loving memory one daughter, Theresa Ochoa of San Tan Valley, Ariz.; three sons, David Hernandez of Mesa, Ariz.; Michael Hernandez and his wife Laura Hernandez of Morgan Hill, Calif.; and Richard Hernandez and his wife Janice Hernandez of Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, Analda Baeza of Miami, Ariz.; ten grandchildren, Jennifer Ochoa of Mesa, Ariz.; Elisa Ochoa of Mesa, Ariz.; Alan Ochoa Jr. of Mesa, Ariz.; Brittany Neuman of Ashville, N.C.; Isabel Hernandez of Morgan Hill, Calif.; Marcus Hernandez of Morgan Hill, Calif.; Derek Hernandez of Morgan Hill, Calif.; Joshua Salazar of San Tan Valley, Ariz.; Jacob Hernandez of Mesa, Ariz.; and Jenna Hernandez of Mesa, Ariz.; and five great grandchildren, Trey, Maddie, Easton, Levi and Blayne.

Visitation was held the morning of Saturday, Aug. 2 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Miami. Rosary and the funeral Mass followed with burial in Mt. Breeze Memorial Gardens.

Gerald Vincent Scott of Van Horn and formerly of Alpine passed from this life on August 9, 2014 from complications following leukemia treatment in El Paso.

A celebration of Gerald’s life will be hosted by his family at 1106 West Broadway in Van Horn at 2pm Saturday, August 16.

He was born March 3, 1946 in El Paso to Charles and Mary Ellen Scott, the fourth of six children. He attended St. Pius X Elementary and was a 1964 graduate of Cathedral High School.

Gerald served four years as a machinist mate in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS Frank Knox during the Vietnam War.

Gerald was a graduate of Sul Ross State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology.  Most of his career was involved with mining and geology.  He had worked as a prospector, a mine superintendent and a mine manager in Brewster, Presidio, Culberson and Hudspeth counties of Far West Texas.  Gerald was a skilled welder, mechanic and had a passion for most things old and unusual.

He had spent the past two decades of his life pursuing a passion for junk; creating metal sculptures from salvage.  His works of art were shown in public installations ranging from the Chamizal National Memorial to the Ellen Noel Art Museum in Odessa. One of his pieces, The Alligator, was awarded best of show at the 1997 Ellen Noel Metal Arts Show.

Gerald was known in Van Horn for his art cars and was part of a video produced by the Weather Channel that featured the art scene in Far West Texas.  He participated in art car events in Austin and Alpine.

Gerald designed and built Railroad Park in Alpine and was an advocate of native plants and low water demand landscaping. He was a Texas Master Naturalist and enjoyed observing the natural flora and fauna of the Trans Pecos.

Gerald taught art one year at Van Horn Junior High, when a teacher was needed at the last minute.

Every Fourth of July for the past 30 years, Gerald put on his costume and took on the role of “Uncle Sam,” participating in parades and events around the TransPecos.

In his young adulthood he served as a princess escort in the Sun Bowl Carnival in El Paso.

He enjoyed helping others and was a kind and gentle soul that will be missed by all who knew him.

Gerald is survived by Joy, his wife of 35 years; sisters Mary Scott of El Paso, Martha Scott and Gordie Sanborn, his brother-in-law of Alpine; brothers Michael Scott and Gini, his sister-in-law of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and John Scott and Olga Scott, his sister-in-law of El Paso; nieces Helsa Scott of El Paso, Ellen Scott of Denver, Colorado, Susan Scott of Virginia Beach; and nephews Pablo Meza and Veronica Ortega of El Paso and Michael Patrick Scott of Virginia Beach.

Frank J. Schaaf, 52, of Willimantic, Connecticut and formerly of Presidio, peacefully passed away on August 7, 2014.

He grew up in Lyman, Connecticut, graduating from Lyman Memorial High School in 1979.

He is survived by his sister Natascha and her husband Joe Harris of Marfa and by many family members and friends. His parents preceded him in death.

He played many sports and was an avid New York Giants fan. He worked for many years as an aerospace machinist but most recently he enjoyed spending time outside with his great nieces.

Frank will be missed by all of his friends in the Loma Paloma RV Park in Presidio where he lived and worked in the winter of 2013/2014.

Felix “Hawk-eye” Rivera Jr., 57, departed this earth on his journey to be with his Lord on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at his residence in Odessa, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born in Alpine on May 5, 1957 to Felix Rivera Sr. and Martha (Rodriguez) Martinez.

Felix lived life to the fullest. Through the hard times that he faced, he never gave up.  He loved to be around his friends, whether out on a hunting trip or helping out with the horses.  He would never say “No” to lending a hand whenever anyone needed help.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Martha Martinez of Odessa; his father, Felix Rivera Sr. of Fort Davis; siblings, Betty Urbanczyk of Washington state, Jean Cruz of Odessa, Joe Frank Rivera of Odessa, Jerry Rivera and wife Claudia of Alpine, Phillip Martinez and wife Cherri of Odessa, and Margaret Estrada and husband Pete of Odessa; also 14 nephews and four nieces, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and by his special friend who never left his side, who stuck by him until his last breath, Cruz Castillo “Bebe” and his wife Laura of Odessa.

Rosary was the evening of Monday, August 11 at Acres West Funeral Chapel in Odessa. Mass was celebrated the morning of Tuesday, August 12 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Davis with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Cruz Castillo II, Jorge Acosta, Frank “Panchito” Hartnett, Ernest Martinez, Greg Madrid, and Pete Estrada.

The family thanks Home Hospice and the team at Medical Center Hospital’s ICU for all of their help during Felix’s battle with cancer. May God bless each and every one who shared their love and support in so many ways.

                Funeral services were held Monday (Aug. 18) for Don Sugarek, Beeville, president of the Sul Ross State University Alumni Association.

                Sugarek, 71, died Thursday, Aug. 14 in a single-vehicle accident on I-10 near  Seguin. Services were held at First Baptist Church in Beeville, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George Lacy officiating. Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville with full military honors. Trevino Funeral Home of Beeville was in charge of the arrangements.

                The family requests memorials in the form of contributions to Sul Ross.

                Sugarek served as Alumni Association president for the past several years after 10 years as a member of the Board of Directors.

                “Don will be sorely missed,” said Karen Brown, Alumni Association director. “We have lost a true friend of Sul Ross who dearly loved this university and worked tirelessly on its behalf. As a university community, we extend our condolences to his wife, Betty, daughters Sally, Shona, Shala and Sarah and their families.”

                Donald Randolph Sugarek was born Jan.  23, 1943, in Beeville to James Randolph and Ruby Wood Sugarek. After graduating from A.C. Jones High School in 1960, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Range Animal Science and Geology in 1967 from Sul Ross. He then completed his Master of Arts degree in Range Animal Science in 1969, also at Sul Ross. From 1973-1974, he completed post-graduate studies in Range Management at Texas A&M University.

                He married Betty Jean Hoot, Corpus Christi, on Jan. 1, 1967 at the First Presbyterian Church of Beeville, They spent the early years of their marriage in Alpine, while he completed his education and worked on the Catto-Gage Ranch.

                Sugarek served in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971 as a Veterinarian Specialist at  Fort Gordon, Ga. He then returned home to Beeville and began his career in farming and ranching. He was a fourth generation Texas farmer who owned and operated Sugarek Farms, which was a row crop and beef production operation for over 25 years. Currently it is a ranching enterprise specializing in commercial meat goat production with an integrated native wildlife management program that utilizes range and water conservation practices.

                For the past 20 years, Sugarek was employed by Texas Farm Bureau as a senior field representative assisting the members of 13 county Farm Bureaus.

                In addition to his work with Sul Ross, he was active in the Beeville community and surrounding area, serving on the Beeville ISD Board of Trustees, past president of the Academic Booster Club, founder of the Renaissance Club at A. C. Jones High School, Bee County Cooperative Association Board member, Children’s Discovery Museum of Victoria board member, South Texas Cotton and Grain Association Board member, and a Bee County Farm Bureau member and Board Director. Sugarek was a member of the Providence Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Beeville where he served as an elder.

                Survivors include his wife, Betty of Beeville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sally and Chuck Hodon of Victoria, Shona and Matt Preston of Abilene, Shala and Lloyd Sturgeon of Harker Heights, and Sarah and Randy Baker of Harker Heights; seven grandchildren, Claire Jane Preston, Laura Nicole Preston, Kaitlyn Marie Hodon, Luke Matthew Preston, Justin Parker Hodon, Ella Claire Sturgeon, and William Rowdy Baker; one sister and brother-in-law, Avis and Earl Wall of Star; and one niece, Emily Hogan and husband Aaron of  College Station. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Randolph and Ruby Wood Sugarek.

He was born on March 1, 1934, in El Paso, Texas to the late Gay Howard and Ruth Espy Howard. His parents were life-long residents of the Marfa community. He was the grandson to the late George A. and Ella Howard, who assisted in the establishment of Presidio County, and J.W. and Lola Espy, who helped settle Jeff Davis County.

Hugh Howard or better known as “Hughie” to his good friends and family, graduated from Marfa High School, where he played football and basketball. He was very popular in high school and was known for keeping the team spirit and morale high. He remained loving sports throughout his life, particularly the Marfa Shorthorns, Dallas Cowboys, and San Antonio Spurs. He cherished the moments he was able to be with his family and watch a sporting event.

He loved life and enjoyed rising very early to go drink coffee at the local restaurant and visit with his friends.

Hughie was a rancher and was part of Howard Mobil his entire life. He was a member of the First Christian Church, and also enjoyed attending church with his family at Grace Christian Fellowship Worship in Alpine.

Survivors include his three sons and their wives, Espy and Esther Howard of Alpine, Noel and Deborah Howard of Ft. Meyers, Florida, and Gregory and Andrea Howard of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

He had five grandchildren, Zackery, Clay, Nathan, Landon, Jacklyn, and a great-grandson, William.

Also a sister, Suzanne Sullivan of Fort Davis; three nieces, Gayle, Zanna, and Katherine’ two nephews, Jim and Jason; and many great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life and memorial service will be held on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 10am at his sister’s ranch – Suzanne Sullivan, located 18 miles north of Fort Davis on Hwy 17.

Lifelong Marfa resident Eva Peña Cortez, 89, left this earth and family to be with the Lord on August 14, 2014 after a long illness.

She was born December 9, 1924 in Marfa to Marcos Peña Sr. and Paulita Salinas Peña.

Eva lived all her life in Marfa and was always in service to her community. She served cakes and made cookies for weddings, wedding shower parties, baby showers and graduation parties to any and all who asked for her help.

She had a wonderful sense of humor, was witty and gracious and always giving.  She served the Marfa community from her heart, was always happy, loved to dance, and was always laughing.

She is survived by her husband, Pedro Cortez Sr. of Marfa; her sons, Billy Cortez of Marfa, Pete Cortez Jr. of Odessa, and Willie Cortez, also of Odessa; her daughters, Olga Martinez of Garland, Texas, and Frances Escarsega of Odessa; her brothers, Marcos Peña Jr. of Marfa, and Adan Peña of San Antonio; her sister, Maria Alicia Peña of Odessa; also 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grand children, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

The Rosary and funeral Mass begin at 9am Friday, September 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa with burial in Merced Cemetery.

The funeral date is to accommodate a grandson who is in the U.S. Navy.

Marfa native Ernesto C. Mendoza, 82, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014 in El Paso with his family by his side.

Visitation will be Friday, August 29 at Hillcrest Funeral Home Carolina with a Rosary recited at 7pm. Funeral Mass is 9:30am Saturday, August 30 at St. Raphael Parish Church, 2301 Zanzibar. Burial will be in Evergreen East Cemetery.

Mr. Mendoza was born June 16, 1932 in Marfa to Ernesto and Manuela Mendoza.

He was a Marfa High School graduate and a proud Shorthorn.

On June 16, 1955 he married Conchita Vasquez in Marfa.

Mr. Mendoza was a retired educator. He had worked as a coach, a teacher and principal in El Paso schools.

He was a Catholic and an active member of the Ex Shorthorn Group of El Paso.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Conchita V. Mendoza; his four daughters, Cynthia A. Esquivel of Marfa, Sandra M. Pacheco, Melissa Betancourt, and Adrienne M. Hirales, all of El Paso; seven grandchildren, Christina Moomau, Celina Esquivel, Dominic Betancourt, Lauren Betancourt, Conrad Martin, Michelle Hirales, and Diego Pacheco; and great-grandsons Jared S. Smith and Easton P. Moomau; also two sisters, Yolanda Uranga of San Antonio and Linda Flores of Del Rio.

Leslie Roxanne Trammell, 35, of Fort Davis and formerly of Columbus, Texas died at her home in the Davis Mountains Resort on Friday, August 22, 2014 after a lengthy illness.

Leslie was born Tuesday, January 2, 1979 at Seton Center in Austin to Samuel R. and Donna Trammell.  She was a 4H and FFA member in Columbus, and a collegiate FFA member at Sul Ross State University.  Leslie showed cattle, horses, and goats for many years and won many awards. She earned the Lone Star Farmer Award in 1997.  Leslie received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Animal Science from Sul Ross.

She was most recently employed at Poco Mexico restaurant in Fort Davis.  Leslie was a loving daughter, niece, cousin, and friend who will be greatly missed but will remain forever in our hearts.

Leslie is survived by her mother, Donna Trammell of Fort Davis, her two aunts, Beth Dennis of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Peggy Delling of Columbus, Texas; her uncle, Thomas Trammell and his wife Lydia of Balmorhea; also numerous cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel R. Trammell; maternal grandparents, Donald and Helen Dennis; and her paternal grandparents, Herman and Elaine Trammell.

Graveside services were the morning of Thursday, August 28 in Hillcrest Cemetery in Fort Davis, with Dennis Trammell officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jeff Davis County 4H or to the Fort Davis FFA.

Mary Ida Hinojos “La Negra” was granted her angel wings on August 25, 2014, her final days surrounded by family and friends who have touched her throughout her memorable life.

Mary was born August 12, 1929 to Jose and Guadalupe Gallego. She was a lifetime resident of Alpine. La Negra was an active member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, where she devoted her time as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and was a member of the Guadalupanas.

She enjoyed good food, socializing, and spending time with her grandchildren, playing board games and Uno. She had a wonderful smile that would light up a room.

Mary is survived by her children, Mike Hinojos (Rebecca) of Houston, Linda Sandate (Orlando) of Baytown, Julian Hinojos of Alpine, Lupe Pohl (Jesse) of Hallettsville, Estella Hinojos of Seguin, Bobby Hinojos (Melinda) of Alpine, Norma Olivo of Alpine, Jose “Pepe” Hinojos of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Natalia Castellano of Alpine; a brother, Julian Gallego of Odessa; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. All brought great joy to her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Guadalupe Gallego, her husband, Hermelindo Hinojos, and daughter, Olga Hinojos, her brother, Joe Gallego, and her sisters, Clara Rodriguez and Virginia Pallanez.

Rosary was the evening of Friday, August 29 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection was the morning of Saturday, August 30 at the church with burial in Holy Angels Cemetery.

Pallbearers are David Sandate, Christopher Shearrow, Julian Hinojos Jr., Michael Hinojos, Matthew Pohl, Sergio Hinojos, Robert Hinojos, and Mark Pohl.

Sam Esqueda, 79, of Alpine passed away at his residence on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.

A Memorial Service will be at 10am Thursday, September 11 at Holy Cross Anglican Church, 907 Fighting Buck Ave. in Alpine with the Reverend Father Robert Jordon officiating. A Masonic Funeral and Burial will be at 1pm Friday, September 12 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso.

Mr. Esqueda was born in Presidio to Jesus and Maria Esqueda. He had retired as crew chief for American Airlines after 24 years of service.

He served in both the U.S. Air Force and retired from the U.S. Navy. He was Past Master of Wallace Hughston Lodge #1393, El Paso, and was a member of the Frontier Lodge #766, Alpine. He was also a member of El Paso Scottish Rite.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Little-Esqueda of Alpine, and a lifelong friend, Johnnie Chambers, also of Alpine; also several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gregoria Lujan; and a brother, Pedro Esqueda.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Sunshine House of Alpine.

Manuela Carrillo Salas, 77, passed away August 22, 2014. She was born to Ramon and Valentina Carrillo on May 27, 1937 in Terlingua.

After the loss of her mother at a very young age, she was raised by a single father and his extended family. She moved to Alpine in 1946 with her family and remained a long-time resident until shortly before her death when she was hospitalized and moved to El Paso.

Manuela was a graduate of Alpine High School. She married the love of her life, Fermin C. Salas Sr. on October 7, 1958 and he remained at her side until she drew her final breath.

This exceptional woman was an inspiration to all by her enormous strength thru severe illness and her unfailing faith in God. She was a wife and mother like no other with her colorful language and the sheer enthusiasm with which she lived life.

The loving and sorrowful family that she leaves behind includes her husband of almost 56 years, Fermin C. Salas Sr.; her brother, Juan Carrillo and family; her eldest daughter, Letticia Sosa and husband Ernesto of El Paso; a daughter, Lorina Porras and husband Leonard also of El Paso; and son, Fermin Salas and wife Ylva of Horizon City; her beloved grandchildren, Jethane and Brje’t Porras of El Paso, Dante and Kierra Salas of Horizon City, and Chyloe Lengyal and husband Mike of San Antonio; and honorary great-grandchildren, Joe and Lauren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, Trinidad Carrillo.

Her services were held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine on August 26, with Nene Espinoza reciting the rosary and Father Mark Salas officiating the funeral mass. She was buried in Holy Angels Cemetery. Pallbearers were Alfredo Silvas Sr., Simon Salas, Pete Salas, Martin Bermudez, Juan Carrillo, Jr., Robert Carrillo, David Contreras and Saul Contreras. Honorary pallbearers were Ezequiel Contreras, Aristeo Mancha, Frankie Silvas and Vicente Acosta.

It was a privilege, true honor and a blessing to have been able to call this beautiful lady a wife, mother and grandmother.

Rosary will be recited at 7pm Friday, September 19 at Santa Teresa de Jesus Catholic Church in Presidio. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2pm Saturday, September 20 at the Redford Catholic Church with Father Miguel Alcuino officiating. Holy burial will be in the Redford Cemetery.

Cruz was born November 24, 1936 in Loving, New Mexico to Sinforosa Gonzalez and Manuel Carrasco. She was a loving mother. She married Manuel Marquez Sr. in 1969. She was also a member of the Catholic Church. She will be greatly missed but will remain forever in our hearts.

Survivors are her son, Manuel Marquez Jr. of Fort Stockton, and a daughter, Maria Isabel Marquez of Presidio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Manuel and Sinforosa Carrasco; her three brothers, Salvador Carrasco, Manuel Carrasco Jr. and Ramon Carrasco.

Glenda Spriggs

A Celebration of Life for Glenda F. Spriggs of Marfa will be at 2pm Saturday, September 20 at the ranch, six miles south of Marfa.

Glenda passed away September 14, 2014. She was born January 20, 1946 in Shuttuck, Oklahoma to Oren M. Cooley Sr. “Jimmy” and Lila A. Cooley. She grew up on ranches in Arnett, Oklahoma; Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; and Pampa, Texas.

Her love of horses and livestock was evident in every aspect of her life. When she was 10 years of age she would ride her favorite steer, Pete, in local parades. She loved traveling, hunting arrowheads, jewelry, horses, and ranching.

Glenda met the love of her life, James M. Spriggs, in 1963 in Texline, Texas. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary September 8, 2014. Glenda and James moved to Alpine in 1971. She worked at the Alpine High School and attended Sul Ross State University. She worked as a United Parcel Service (UPS) driver for 15 years and has been a rancher and homemaker outside of Marfa for 20 years.

Glenda is survived by her husband, James M. Spriggs of Marfa; her daughter, Debra L. Spriggs of Alpine; three brothers, Oren M. Cooley and his wife June of Amarillo, Buckley “Buck” A. Cooley and his wife Mary of Jonestown, Colorado, and Danny R. Cooley and his wife Kae of Hartley, Texas; four nephews, Bobby and Randy Cooley of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Keenan and Kyle Cooley of Hartley, Texas; mother-in-law, Cleona Spriggs of Alpine; brother-in-law, Gary L. Spriggs and his wife Susan and daughter Holly of Alpine; also extended family and children, Dameon, T.J., Graham and Lindsey of Hudson, New Hampshire.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmy and Lila Cooley, daughter Michelle K. Timmons, grandson Hunter Trey Timmons, and nephew Larry Cooley.

She was very devoted to family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Services were entrusted to Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.

Roy Melvin

Roy Clell Melvin, 60, of Marfa, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at his residence.

Roy was born in Pecos on October 17, 1953 to Jack and Jimmie Melvin. He was a self-employed heavy equipment operator and a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife, Doylene Melvin of Marfa; his daughter, Carnel Flores and husband Pete and their children, Allison, Sarah, and Abigail of Andrews; sons, Jack Melvin his wife Mandy and their children, Tyler and Matthew of Odessa, David Barrett his wife Tommye Jo and their children, Bo and Brady of Magnolia, Texas; a sister, Lona Gail Thorne and husband Dale and their son, Roy Dale of Belton, Texas; a brother, Jimmy D “Hammer” Melvin his wife Ellen of Marfa and their children, Barbra Haire and husband Lynne and their children, Kristofer and Alexa of Lubbock, Chester Melvin and wife Amy and their daughter Abby of Ely, Nevada and Michael Melvin of Marfa. He also leaves behind a great-grandchild, Jareth Carrole; and special friends, Pastors Jose and Patricia Cordero and the Joe Medley family.

Mr. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Jimmie Melvin; and grandparents, Jessie and Lona Birdsong of Belton, Texas and Roy A. and Maise Melvin of Salado, Texas.

Visitation was held at the Geeslin Chapel in Alpine the evening of Sunday, September 21. Graveside service was the morning of Monday, September 22 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Fort Davis with Pastor Jose Cordero officiating.

Viola Duke

Former Marfa resident Viola Robinson Duke, 85, passed away August 18, 2014 in Lancaster, California.

She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 11, 1929 to Mercedes Velasco and Willis Robinson and was raised in Marfa, attending Blackwell School and Marfa High School.

She is survived by her children, Don, Dave, Denise and Curt; her sister, Dora Sanchez; and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.

Viola was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband Jose Duke, sister Betty Valenzuela and sons Danny, Dean, and Craig.

She was loved and will be missed.
