Joseph “Pops” Herron Benson of Kerrville peacefully went to be with the Lord on Easter morning, March 31, 2013 at the age of 103.
He was born in Alpine on November 18, 1909. He married Adele “Gran” Forrester Benson in Dallas on March 22, 1936 and has been a resident of Hunt and Kerrville since 1952. Joe was a member of Kerrville Bible Church.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great-grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Jack Moore of Kerrville; two granddaughters, Debbie Flores of Kerrville and Joanie Weeks of Boerne.
He was a loving “Pops” to five great grandchildren, Katie, Karen, Hayley, Jaclyn, and DJ; and five great-great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Tyler, Brady, Finn and Harper.
One of Joe’s many passions was hunting in West Texas, not only for the sport but also for the camaraderie and valued time spent with life long friends. While on these hunts, he spent more time teaching and less time hunting, as his main goal was to forge bonds with the people and friendships he so valued. Most important to him though was his family. With his love, came a sense of pride and unending support. He continuously displayed an abundance of joy and truly touched those that knew him. Joe will forever be remembered and cherished as a leader, a family man, and our “Pops.”
Burial was the afternoon of Tuesday, April 9 in Elm Grove Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Chris McKnight in Alpine, where Joe grew up. Honorary pallbearers are Harvey Brinkman, L.D. Brinkman, Bubba Vlasek, Gerald James, Mark Daugherty, and Tom Daniels.
The family thanks Sid Peterson Hospice, Hilltop nurses, and several loving sitters who helped care for Joe well into his final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kerrville Bible Church, Sid Peterson Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
