Mary Ida Hinojos “La Negra” was granted her angel wings on August 25, 2014, her final days surrounded by family and friends who have touched her throughout her memorable life.
Mary was born August 12, 1929 to Jose and Guadalupe Gallego. She was a lifetime resident of Alpine. La Negra was an active member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, where she devoted her time as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and was a member of the Guadalupanas.
She enjoyed good food, socializing, and spending time with her grandchildren, playing board games and Uno. She had a wonderful smile that would light up a room.
Mary is survived by her children, Mike Hinojos (Rebecca) of Houston, Linda Sandate (Orlando) of Baytown, Julian Hinojos of Alpine, Lupe Pohl (Jesse) of Hallettsville, Estella Hinojos of Seguin, Bobby Hinojos (Melinda) of Alpine, Norma Olivo of Alpine, Jose “Pepe” Hinojos of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Natalia Castellano of Alpine; a brother, Julian Gallego of Odessa; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. All brought great joy to her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Guadalupe Gallego, her husband, Hermelindo Hinojos, and daughter, Olga Hinojos, her brother, Joe Gallego, and her sisters, Clara Rodriguez and Virginia Pallanez.
Rosary was the evening of Friday, August 29 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection was the morning of Saturday, August 30 at the church with burial in Holy Angels Cemetery.
Pallbearers are David Sandate, Christopher Shearrow, Julian Hinojos Jr., Michael Hinojos, Matthew Pohl, Sergio Hinojos, Robert Hinojos, and Mark Pohl.
Alpine Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
