John Blackman IV

John Nixon Blackman IV, 56, a lJohn Nixon Blackman IV, 56, a long-time Alpine resident, passed away unexpectedly and way too soon on Monday, February 23, 2015 at his home.

A memorial service is at 2pm Saturday, February 28 at the Granada Theater in Alpine.

John was born November 26, 1958 in Alpine to John and Margaret Blackman. He graduated for Permian High School in 1977, was an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow Vigil, and coached thousands of kids in soccer. He gardened, was an avid hiker and camper, a lover of the region, a lover of all creatures large and small, was a flower grower extraordinaire, and a retired TxDOT engineer specialist after 26 years of service.

John’s passion for the arts was enormous, and his contributions to Alpine were numerous: he designed and touched every roadway in a five-county area, he was a hydrologist, environmental specialist, was instrumental in the new Alpine murals, and his devotion and commitment to ArtWalk was unmatched, endeavors he carried out with great joy and love.

A loving and devoted son, father, husband and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Keri Anne Blackman of Alpine; a son, Sgt. John Blackman V, his wife Blakely, and children Jade, Hadley, and John Blackman VI of Fairbanks Alaska; a son, Joshua Blackman; daughter Taylor Blackman of Alpine; his brother Mark and wife Buff Blackman of Hunt, Texas; son Mark Jr.; granddaughter Adrianna Blackman of Houston; daughter Liz and husband Kyle Mixon; granddaughter Sara of Houston; brother Matt and  wife Melanie; and daughter Lindsey Blackman of Austin; and his longtime friend, John Davis of Alpine.

In lieu of flowers, contributions and memorials in John’s honor may be made to the Boy Scouts of America Buffalo Trails Council or The Alpine Humane Society.
