Lucia Ortega

Lucia Román Ortega passed away with grace and dignity on August 24, 2017.

Lucia was born in Marfa on December 12, 1927 to José Román and Lupe Velasco Román. She attended Blackwell School in Marfa. Upon graduating from Blackwell, Lucia attended Lydia Patterson Institute, a Methodist Christian college preparatory school in El Paso. Choosing to return home to Marfa, she completed her high school education at Marfa High School from which she graduated in 1946.

On December 25, 1954, Lucia married Moises Jose Ortega at San Pablo Methodist Church. After residing in several small towns throughout West Texas, they eventually settled in Fort Worth. They would reside there until each was called home to be with the Lord.

Lucia worked for Clark’s Department Stores as a department manager for many years. When Clark’s closed its Fort Worth locations, Lucia joined Senior Citizen Services of Greater Tarrant County as an assistant at the Drop-In Senior Citizens Center. She eventually was promoted to Center Director, a position she held for the next 26 years. After her retirement, she continued her work with Senior Citizens Services of Greater Tarrant County as a part-time employee.

Lucia was an active member of La Trinidad Methodist Church in Fort Worth for more than 50 years. Both she and her husband served as officers in the men’s and women’s organizations of the church.

“Ms. Lucy,” as her closest friends affectionately knew her, loved lemon pie, pistachio ice cream, playing chicken and watching reruns of old westerns. Ms. Lucy also loved anything on the Hallmark Channel. She was a Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers fan and loved watching professional tennis matches.

Lucia is survived by her sister, Lupita Roman Mendias of Marfa, and many nieces, nephews, friends, family, and church members.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Moises Jose Ortega; her father, Jose Román; mother, Lupe Velasco Román; stepmother, Juanita Medina Román; sister, Berta Román, and brothers; Jose Román Jr., and Reymundo Alvaro Román.
